Four Eggs on the Nest

A surveillance camera has revealed that Rose and Monty now have four eggs in their nest, their second one of the season after the first one was breached by a skunk. A new, very large exclosure was placed over the nest after the first egg was laid, to protect it from predators. The Piping Plovers are exchanging incubation duties, with one of them nearly continuously on the nest.

The new nest is on the protected beach area and can be viewed from behind the fence on the public beach.

As always, we ask visitors to give this endangered species room to feed and roam, not enter the fenced-offed areas (including the protected beach area), and keep all dogs off the protected beach, public beach and dunes, in accordance with Chicago’s posted ordinances.

We wish Rose and Monty a successful nesting experience and hope to see little chicks by mid-July!
